Braxton Bragg was born March 21, 1817, in Warrenton, North Carolina. After graduating from West Point in 1837, he served in the Seminole Wars and Mexican War. He married Eliza (Elise) Brooks Ellis in 1856. In early 1861 he commanded state forces in Louisiana, and in March of that year was appointed brigadier general and ordered to Pensacola, Fla.
